The ECIIA is the voice of internal audit in Europe. Our role is to enhance corporate governance through the promotion of the professional practice of internal auditing.
Our members comprise national institutes of internal auditing from countries that fall within the wider European region. It is part of our mission to help them develop, share and promote best practice in the private and public sectors.
We are also heavily involved in advising and consulting with other European institutions on internal auditing and represent our members to governments, legislators, policy-makers, professional
Our members belong to Global IIA, a body that represents over 180,000 internal auditors worldwide. We work closely with Global IIA to promote the professional practice of internal auditing in Europe.
We are run by our members through our formal governance structure.
Internal auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organisation’s operations. It helps an organisation accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.
To be the consolidated voice for the profession of internal auditing in Europe by dealing with the European Union, its Parliament and Commission and any other appropriate institution of influence and to present and develop the internal audit profession and good corporate governance in Europe.
Global IIA is a dynamic, global organisation that represents internal auditors worldwide. It has more than 180,000 members.
ECIIA works with Global IIA to promote the professional practice of internal auditing in Europe. In particular, we endorse Global IIA’s Standards, its Code of Ethics and its Certification programmes.
The Standards, or the Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing, are a principles-based framework for performing and promoting internal auditing. All professional internal auditors must follow the Standards. You can download the Standards here.

Global IIA’s Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) qualification is the only globally-accepted designation for internal auditors. Its four-part exam remains the standard by which internal auditors demonstrate their comprehensive
competence and professionalism. In addition, Global IIA offers four specialised certifications.

The members of the organization
are the National IIA Institutes,
represented by their President.
Board of 8 members with a
President, a Vice President and
a Treasurer 7 meetings yearly.
The Board defines the strategic
plan and the objectives.
The Secretary General is appointed
by the Board and validated by the
General Assembly and implements
the Board’s decisions.
The Public Affairs Committee is
chaired by the Vice President.
The members are volunteers.
